Abstract

Detailed sub-bottom profiling revealed extensive occurrence of acoustic maskings along the western continental margin of India. These maskings are considered to be methane-rich. A conservative estimate of the potential sub-surface methane in these gas-charged sediments is found to be of the order 2.60 Tg. Further, a rough estimate of the annual total output of methane from the area is found to be 0.039 Tg CH 4, which may diffuse into the overlying waters in the event of destabilization of this reservoir due to neo-tectonic activity.
