Abstract

1. 1. The methaemoglobin concentration was <3% of the total haemoglobin in erythrocytes from several species of reptiles and birds. 2. 2. Both NADH and NADPH methaemoglobin reductase activities were present in the nucleated erythrocytes from all species tested. 3. 3. NADH methaemoglobin reductase was found to be strongly membrane bound in nucleated erythrocytes. 4. 4. The data suggest that the T.C.A. cycle can play a significant part in the reduction of methaemoglobin in nucleated erythrocytes.
