Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate metered-dose inhaler (MDI) technique among hospital-based physiotherapists and to identify factors which may have influenced their technique. A representative sample of 40 physiotherapists demonstrated their MDI technique, which was assessed using a weighted eight-step scoring system. A questionnaire pertaining to their current work area and experience with MDIs was also administered. The results indicated that 55% of the physiotherapists used the MDI technique correctly. The only factor found to influence MDI technique was experience in teaching the technique to patients. There was no difference between score of MDI technique and any other variable. The finding of a 45% rate of incorrect MDI technique among hospital-based physiotherapists is of concern and may be a factor in the high incidence of MDI misuse commonly found in patients.
