Abstract

Against a backdrop of a constant hail of sporadic meteors, mainly from the zodiacal dust cloud, meteor activity can increase significantly at certain times of the year. Anyone who has even a passing interest in astronomy will know, of course, that these meteor showers are the debris left behind mainly by comets disintegrating as they approach the inner Solar System, and a few so-called active asteroids. But to leave it at that paints a simplistic picture that fails to place meteors in their true context.
