Abstract

In the last year of the World War, and in the year following, some 550 observations of temperature and humidity were made in northeastern France by the British Meteorological Section, R. E. The data were used currently in forecasting and were later summarized in an important paper by Capt. C. K. M. Douglas of the British Meteorological Office. This type of free‐air investigation has been continued in Great Britain, a recent report stating that some 300 observations were obtained during the past year. The heights reached are usually about three kilometers, in some cases considerably greater. These heights are determined by means of an altimeter, corrected for air temperature.
