Abstract

Unsaturated nitriles of the general formula CH 2CH(CH 2 n CN (n ⩾ 1) can undergo metathesis or co-metathesis with linear alkenes in the presence of a homogeneous catalyst system, viz. WCl 6-Sn(CH 3) 4 or a heterogeneous catalyst system, viz. Re 2O 7/Al 2O 3-SnR 4 (R = CH 3 or C 2H 5), with high selectivity. The reaction temperature in the homogeneous case is 373 K, while the heterogeneous system shows high activity at room temperature. The reactivity of the unsaturated nitriles is a function of n, depending on the catalyst system in use. The results are rationalized in terms of different interactions between the substrates and the catalyst as a function of the chain length of the substrate molecule.
