Abstract

Abstract Using examples, old and recent, from the metallurgical literature, we examine the sources of metastable behavior in binary and ternary alloy systems that are subjected to cooling rates in the order of K/min to K/s. Because the metastability invariably involves enhanced unstable or suppressed stable crystalline phases, the key to this behavior must be sought in the crystallization kinetics.
