Abstract

Electromagnetic (EM) waves are not useful for underground wireless communication, due to high path losses, changing channel condition and requirement of large size antennas. Magnetic Induction (MI) communication is an alternate technique with great potentials in RF-challenging environments, such as underground and underwater applications where propagation medium is rock and water but no longer air. Since the Magnetic fields attenuated very fast in the near field region, Metamaterial enhanced Magnetic Induction (M2I) communication has been established. In this scheme MI coil antenna is encased by a metamaterial spherical shell that can amplify the magnetic fields around the MI transceivers. In this paper M2I communication scheme is used and the comparison is done using different infilling material between coil antenna and a metamaterial spherical shell but same antenna size for fair comparison. The results showing that mutual inductance can be varied by varying the infilling and is improved. Also the antenna size is reduced so that the M2I communication is established using small size coils.
