Abstract

The free iron observed in as-cast Nd2Fe14B type alloys is due to the presence of a peritectic reaction during solidification and adversely affects the magnetic properties of the bonded magnets made from these alloys. It was found that the iron could be completely removed by either homogenization treatments or hydrogen processing. The findings of this investigation may be used to develop a new group of permanent magnets or to treat other alloys.
