Abstract

The extremely high air lead level is a problem in Hungary, especially in Budapest. The toxic effect of lead is one of the most serious problems in our country. The correlation between lead and essential metal (Zn, Fe, Ca, Cu) concentration in blood has been studied for several years. Not only cations but some related proteins can regulate blood lead levels. We investigated the depletion of metallothionein (Mt) by heavy metals. We examined blood samples taken from 60 patients who live in the inner district of Budapest. The concentration of heavy metals was measured by ICP-AES. The metallothionein level was determined by enzyme linked immuno- sorbent assay. A correlation was found between the levels of heavy metals and metallothionein.
