Abstract

Metallographic analyses were performed on a fragment of steel recovered after the disintegration of Sputnik 4 and on a melted agglomerate found on the fragment. The examination indicated that the material was a hot-rolled carbon steel similar in hardness to a structural steel with a tensile strength of 3.8 to 4.1 x 10/sup 10/ dynes/cm/sup 2/. The major portion of the fragment exhibited a banded structure characteristic of hot-rolled material. The upper surface was probably heated to the melting point which resulted in the formation of a narrow band similar to an as-cast Widmannstaettn microstructure. The melted material at the bottom of the specimen was a porous mass containing several different varieties of inclusions and compounds. (auth)
