Abstract

The artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) operation of planar periodic metallic arrays on grounded dielectric substrate without vias is studied in conjunction with their electromagnetic band gap (EBG) performance. An approximate ray analysis is proposed that models the AMC as an infinitely wide resonant cavity formed by a perfect electric conductor and a partially reflective surface. The proposed model yields physical insight in the AMC operation and its validity is confirmed using rigorous full-wave analysis. A full wave parametric study of the AMC and EBG properties is carried out in order to investigate coexistence of the two features in the frequency domain. The simultaneous AMC and EBG operation for metallodielectric arrays without vias is demonstrated by means of experimental results.
