Abstract

The thermodynamic and structural conditions for easy glass formation of metallic alloys are reviewed. Embrittlement of metallic glasses during annealing below the crystallization temperature is discussed in terms of the disappearance of free volume and a phase separation in the amorphous state. The latter is suggested by FIM atom probe studies on (Fe Ni) 80 B 20, Nb 40 Ni 60 and Ti 50 Be 40 Zr 10.
