Abstract

Ferromagnetic resonance has been used to characterize the effect of metal-support interactions on nickel metal particles, by studying Ni/TiO2 and Ni/SiO2 catalysts. The variation of shape and linewidth (ΔH) of the FMR signal with measurement temperature indicates that in the Ni/SiO2 catalysts, with low metal-support interactions, the nickel particles are nearly spherical. with d ⩽ 4 nm. Ni/TiO2 catalysts show higher heterogeneity, with the presence of spherical (d ~ 4–7 nm) and planar particles, the latter being substantially covered by the TiO2 support but sensitive to hydrogen desorption.
