Abstract

ABSTRACT Starting in the early twentieth century, the Durafour Company of Algiers was experimenting with new construction techniques to encourage growth, and helped spread the use of metallic architecture in Algeria. The company played an important role in the process of architectural creation and helped bring about a new culture of construction. The colonial era Algiers-based journal Les Chantiers nord-africains (published between 1929–39 and 1950–62) documented some of the company’s projects. This essay examines those projects and addresses some aspects of the transfer and circulation of techniques and know-how.
