Abstract
This study investigated the employment of metadiscourse as appeared in L1 and L2 writing of an English magazine that publishes contributions of multilingual members of the international community. With a postulation that the magazine constitutes a discourse community, this study attempted to identify differences and/or similarities in their use of the metadiscourse markers, and metadiscoursal practices distinctive of the community. While L2 writers` inclination toward “explicitness” was found in both textual and interpersonal metadiscourse, more similarities were observed than differences between the two groups. A possible interpretation is that in the tight discourse community, the outcome of cooperation and interaction in writing may outweigh the cultural-rhetoric and/or interlanguage factors, resulting in assimilation of L1 uses by L2 users. L2 members` usage of we in various levels signals a presence of the discourse norm internalized by them. (Chosun University)
