Abstract

In the last issue of the Metabolomics journal, we described how every year the Board of Directors of the International Metabolomics Society undergoes a public election process to replace Directors whose terms of service have finished. This process has come to an end this year and three new Directors have been elected based on most votes received from the society’s membership. We would like to thank the Directors who will finish their terms and leave the Board this year including Professor Marta Cascante, Professor Matej Oresic and Professor Josh Rabinowitz for their contribution over the last years. According to the Society’s bylaws, these colleagues are eligible to stand for reelection to another term in the future. The members of the society had the opportunity to vote for their top choices from a list of 12 outstanding scientists nominated for election. The three candidates with the most votes were welcomed to the Board of Directors. We have two new Directors, Professor Gary Siudzak from the Scripps Research Institute in the US and Dr. Darren Creek from The University of Melbourne. We also welcome a returning Director, Professor Oliver Fiehn from University of California, Davis. Oliver was instrumental in helping establish the metabolomics society in the early days and has previously served on the Board as a Director and the Treasurer between 2008 and 2010. Professor Fiehn obtained his MSc in Analytical Sciences in 1993 from the Free University Berlin and then received his PhD in Analytical Chemistry in 1997 at the Technical University of Berlin. From 1998 to 1999, Prof Fiehn served as an associate research scientist in metabolomics at the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology in Golm, Germany. He later became a group leader from 2000 to 2004. Dr. Fiehn joined the faculty at the University of California at Davis in 2004 as an Associate Professor within the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology.
