Abstract

Analysis of the concentrated culture filtrates by paper chromatography showed the presence of a series of oligosaccharides. Partial resolution of the saccharides was accomplished by charcoal–celite column and paper chromatography. 6-O-β-D-Fructofuranosyl-D-glucose and 4-O-β-D-fructofuranosyl-D-glucose were identified by methylation and hydrolysis followed by g.l.c. analysis of the component O-methyl sugars. Similarly, the occurrence of 2-O-β-D-fructofuranosyl-D-fructofuranose, a unique difructose, was demonstrated and evidence is presented for the presence of minor amounts of 1-O-β-D-fructofuranosyl-D-fructose and 6-O-β-D-fructofuranosyl-D-fructose. Of the series of higher oligomers, the structure of one trisaccharide (a difructosylglucose) was determined.
