Abstract

2- 14C-guanine was injected into pupae and pharate adults of the Pierid butterfly Colias croceus during each day of development. Labelled compounds were found, after emergence of the adult, in the body, wings, and meconium; their amount increases in animals injected at a late stage; a quantitative variation has also been observed in the different places of excretion. The main compounds are purines and ureides: guanine, xanthine, hypoxanthine, uric acid, allantoin, and allantoic acid. A variation has been observed in the radioactivity of these compounds related to the day of injection. The physiological significance of these facts has been studied, in relation to the theories of excretion in insects.
