Abstract

PHENOLIC glycosides are common constituents of plant tissues but little is known about the biosynthesis of the glycosidic bond in these compounds. Bourquelot and Herissey synthesized (o-hydroxy-benzyl)-(β-glucoside by incubating glucose with saligenin in the presence of emulsin1, but it is unlikely that transglycosylation of this type is an important mechanism for the biosynthesis of glycosides in vivo. The formation of aryl glucosides by leaf disks infused with various phenols has been reported by Miwa et al. 2 and it appears that glucose-1-phosphate is involved in these reactions.
