Abstract

The metabolism of C14-labeled glutamic acid by the isolated perfused heart was studied. Glutamic acid is readily assimilated by the normally beating heart and in the course of an hour's perfusion about 22% is oxidized to C14O2. Approximately 3.6% of the administered radioactivity is converted to glutamine. The utilization of glucose by the preparation is variable and not correlated with the concentration of glucose in the perfusate.
