Abstract

The insecticide demeton S-methyl sufoxide (I) is oxidized by sugar-beet cell cultures to demeton S-methy sulfone (II). Cleavage of the thioester bond of I and II formed ethanethiols which were transformed to S-methylated compounds or S-glucosides. In addition another two metabolites were identified: ethyl vinyl sulfoxide (V), via ß-elimination of 0,0-dimethyl thiophospate from the parent insecticide, and [1-(ethylsulfinyl)-2-(methylthio)] -ethane (VII).
