Abstract

1. 1. American flamingos, Phoenicopterus ruber, denied dietary carotenoids for some 6 months, underwent a decrease of about 86 per cent in their average blood-carotenoid level. 2. 2. Subsequently fed a surplus of β-carotene in their daily diet, the birds voided some excess β-carotene and considerable zeaxanthin in their feces, while accumulating unchanged β-carotene as well as echinenone and preponderantly canthaxanthin in the liver. 3. 3. With the restoration of blood-carotenoid levels on a diet containing β-carotene, the only carotenoids detected therein were echinenone (3–9 per cent of total) and the major fraction, canthaxanthin.
