Abstract

SummaryOn the basis of: (1) Comparable rates of 5HTA and tyramine metabolism in tissues of 3 different animals; (2) comparable inhibition of metabolism of both amines by IIH7 a potent monoamine oxidase inhibitor; (3) a demonstration that 5HTA is metabolized by the mitochondrial portion of the liver cell; and (4) a prolongation of the effects of 5HTA in vivo following pretreatment with IIH; it is concluded that monoamine oxidase is the major pathway of 5HTA metabolism in animals.
