Abstract

An approach alternative to the conventional regression analysis of two-dismensional distribution of mammalian body sizes and metabolic rates is proposed. It is hypothetized that the actual species-specific energy budgets fill the space between physiological constraints functionally related to body mass. The allometric correlation between energy budgets and body mass is a side effect of this pattern. An attempt was made to identify and quantify the relevant constraining functions.
