Abstract

The hypertrophyof the right ventricle is not because of pressureoverload, and therefore non-haemodynamic factors, such as angiotensin II, aldosterone, insulin, thesympathetic nervous system and endothelin may beinvolved in this process. The contribution of non-haemodynamic factors tothe development of cardiac hypertrophy may alsoexplain why in several studies it has been shown thatthe increase in left ventricular mass precededhypertension. For example, we followed 500 younghealthy Israeli air force aviators, who underwentechocardiography at the start of their military servicefor an average period of 7.5±3.0 years.
