Abstract

Carbohydrates, amino acids, and fatty acids have been shown to stimulate insulin release. This article reviews the various theoretical possibilities and available evidence as to the mechanism by which the above substances could promote insulin secretion. The various parent compounds or their metabolites per se, or the concomitant alteration of the redox state of the β-cell could offer a unifying mechanism of the action of carbohydrate, amino acid and fatty acid-induced insulin release.
