Abstract

In primates, including humans, the estrogen receptor mediating neural hypothalamic control of metabolic and reproductive function is unknown. This study therefore tests the hypothesis that diminished estradiol (E2) action by neuronal ESR1 in the female nonhuman primate mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) causes weight gain and hyperandrogenism resembling polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women.
