Abstract

Objectives
To evaluate metabolic alterations along Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) development in lacrimal glands (LGs).
Study Design
The GLUT-1, FASN, HIF-1α, and adipophilin protein expression was retrospectively analyzed in 9 cases of pleomorphic adenoma (PA), 4 cases of residual PA (rPA), and 4 cases CXPA of LG.
Results
GLUT-1, FASN, and adipophilin were more expressed in CXPA, whereas HIF-1α was more expressed in PA. Our results showed a higher expression of markers associated with glycolytic and lipid metabolism in the tumor tissue samples when compared to the normal LG.
Conclusions
Our results demonstrate that higher expression of GLUT-1, FASN, and adipophilin in the carcinomatous component may be reflecting a higher energy increase in malignant CXPA cells and suggested the metabolic alterations in LG CXPA development is similar to the malignant transformation of PA in salivary glands.
