Abstract

In acousto-optics (AO), light is diffracted by traveling ultrasound into upshifted or downshifted orders depending on their respective propagation vectors. In conventional AO (CAO), the acoustic group velocity has the same direction as the phase velocity, and hence, the acoustic propagation vector. However, in an acoustic metamaterial, the group velocity can be positive while the phase velocity is negative. The interaction between light and sound wave-vectors are different for meta AO (MAO), implying a new interpretation for upshifted and downshifted interactions in MAO. We provide a heuristic treatment and outline the theory for detailed analysis of interaction between light and pulsed and focused ultrasound in acoustic metamaterials.
