Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of sodium has been measured relative to the 6Li(n, α)T reaction cross section. This measurement has been made by an activation method. Themonoenergetic neutron beam was obtained from a Van de Graaff accelerator, using the 7Li(p, n) 7Be reaction. The activity of the sodium sample was measured by a sodium iodide scintillator; the efficiency of this counter was determined by comparison with a β-counter in a 4π geometry. The neutron flux was measured by a 6Li glass scintillator. The cross section shows two resonances at 35 keV and 55 keV. The 35 keV resonance was not detected by previous total cross-section measurements.
