Abstract

Child and adolescent psychiatrists necessarily interact with the family system of an identified patient. However, our models focus on the individual youth without direct attention to the broader family context. The child is the recipient of an assessment and interventions. Research shows that this may limit the efficacy of the child-focused intervention and lead to failure to identify systemic issues that can impede child mental health. Participants will describe the elements of family-based care and differentiate these from child psychiatry-as-usual.
