Abstract

A previous experiment indicated (1) that the accuracy of message reception is relatively independent of the size of the message ensemble if the number of response alternatives is held constant; and (2) that the accuracy of monitoring performance is independent of the number of irrelevant response alternatives. The present study attempts to determine whether the same generalizations are warranted in the case where the message and response alternatives are randomly chosen from the English language.
