Abstract

elcome to the International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning held in Budapest, Hungary. TIME 2006 is the thirteenth in the sequence of events organized to bring together active researchers from distinct research areas involving representation of, or reasoning about, time. This symposium follows the strong and successful tradition of this series of events and provides a focal point for international research on temporal representation and reasoning in artificial intelligence, database systems, and temporal logic. A special feature of the 2006 edition of the symposium is a greater emphasis on the area of temporal representation and reasoning in natural languages and its connections to the three other areas. We received a total of 46 paper submissions representing a wide range of research topics from a truly international group of authors. There were twenty-six submissions from Europe, thirteen from America, six from Asia, and one from Africa. As a result of a thorough review process, 25 papers were selected for presentation at the symposium. In addition to the contributed papers, we were glad to include invited papers and talks by two leaders of our scientific community: Anthony Galton (University of Exeter, UK), who presented “Processes as Continuants,” and Christian Jensen (Aalborg University, Denmark), who presented “How Would You Like to Aggregate Your Temporal Data?,” a joint work with Michael Bohlen and Johann Gamper. We hope that the set of selected papers, their presentations, the invited talks, and the discussions among the participants of the symposium will help to further stimulate research efforts in the area of temporal representation and reasoning.
