Abstract

Dear JUQ Reader, It is a pleasure to welcome you to the first issue of the SIAM/ASA Journal on Uncertainty Quantification. The journal exists because of the increasing importance of uncertainty quantification (UQ) in science and society, and the vision of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the American Statistical Association (ASA) in recognizing the need to work together to create a journal to address UQ. UQ's increasing importance is a consequence of the central role of mathematical, statistical, and computational modeling in scientific discovery, engineering design, risk assessment, and decision making in almost every area of human activity. Modeling results are subject to errors and uncertainty emanating from a variety of sources, including uncertainty in input data obtained from experiment and observation, limitations of physical modeling, discretization and approximation, and problems in computer codes. Quantifying the effects of these errors and uncertainty is critically important in the context of decisions bearing practical consequences and expenses. JUQ is dedicated to nurturing synergistic interactions between the mathematical, statistical, computational, and applications communities involved in UQ. The journal began accepting submissions in May of 2012. By mid March 2013, JUQ had received 65 manuscripts submitted for publication. Of these, you will find the first seven accepted papers in the initial all-electronic batch published in March 2013. This first group marks the point at which we have established a regular rate of acceptances, building the foundation for the future. JUQ came to light thanks to the efforts of numerous people, whom we would like to acknowledge. Jim Crowley from SIAM and Ron Wasserstein from the ASA were highly supportive and enabled the collaboration between the two societies. We thank our colleagues in leadership roles at ASA and SIAM for their effort, ideas, and vision during the proposal and negotiation stages of the journal approval process. The SIAM staff that produces the journal is superb; in particular, Mitch Chernoff and James Haines have provided critical support. We are grateful to all of the leaders in UQ who joined the editorial board. The board has been extremely supportive and has worked hard to guarantee timely and high-quality reviews. Please enjoy your reading, and we look forward to your submissions in the future. Sincerely,\newline James Berger\newline Donald Estep\newline Max Gunzburger\newline Editors,\newline SIAM/ASA Journal on Uncertainty Quantification
