Abstract

A seismic reflection profiling survey has indicated the existence of downfaulted Mesozoic sequences in Edøyfjorden south of Smøla (Trondheimsleia) and in Beitstadfjorden. These rocks are preserved in halfgrabens within the Møre-Trøndelag Fault Zone (MTFZ) which is interpreted as an important structural element in Central Norway. The MTFZ probably originated in the Palaeozoic, and at least two phases of reactivation can be recognized in the Mesozoic sequences.
