Abstract

What happens in the brain during hypnosis? Experimental research into hypnosis is made difficult by a relative scarcity of empirical parameters. Can hypnosis offer any suitable empirical correlate, such as a measurable change in neural activity? Preliminary results from two recent studies, conducted by Sakari Kallio et al., indicate that information processing is altered during hypnosis in highly hypnotizable subjects. More specifically, these studies implicate the frontal lobe and the involvement of both attentive and preattentive mechanisms.
