Abstract
A SPH model is established, combined with JH-2 model for solving brittle surface erosion problems, which is validated by impact experiments. Simulations are conducted by varying particle incident parameters. Results show that crack formation is affected by impact angle αi, initial orientation θi, and impact velocity Vi. While crack propagation direction is mainly dominated by θi. Surface fragmentation caused by lateral cracks can greatly increase brittle surface erosion, which is most likely to occur at θi= +30°. Without surface fragmentation, a critical orientation angle exists. Secondary impact is also a critical factor for surface erosion and determined by θi. Particles with smaller θi tend to roll on the surface, whereas larger θi particles are more likely to bounce off the surface.
