We thank O'Sullivan et al for their comments, and agree largely with the points that have been made. With regard to CT examination of multitrauma patients; ideal techniques may not always be possible or indeed applicable, but may need to be modified in a given situation. In our case the CT scan demonstrated an extensive traumatic rupture of the thoracic aorta.
