Abstract

This article focuses on the concept of “human security” within the framework of the new understanding of security, and examines the perception of security / feeling of safety by women and LGBTI +. In the article, it is explained what strategies women and LGBTI + individuals who are under the threat / risk of violence develop in order to protect themselves from violence and which realms they create in order to stay safe. Gender-based violence is often seen as a problem of its own, reduced to an individual issue, and is rendered unrealistic with certainty. This study, using qualitative research techniques on the basis of feminist methodology, focuses on the women and LGBTI + people’s, who are living in Diyarbakir and Canakkale and coming from different life spaces, perceptions of (in)security. Moreover, the study also examines the variables which have effect on gender-based violence and those in relation to it on the concept of (in)security.
