Abstract
H. Houston Merritt's previous editions, entitled A Textbook of Neurology , should be familiar to most ophthalmologists. Merritt published his first edition in 1959, and by his death in 1979 he had produced six editions. Although the seventh edition, entitled Merritt's Textbook of Neurology , differed from its predecessors in that it was written by several authors, the present edition, edited by Lewis P. Rowland, differs even more significantly, with a total of 74 authors contributing to the 164 chapters of this 964-page book. The new edition... should prove useful for those wishing to quickly review specific aspects of most diseases of the nervous system. Nonetheless, the editor has maintained the continuity of the earlier editions with his concise approach to each subject in a well-organized format. Although some of the subjects appear to be treated superficially, and the limited amount of space given to each author occasionally leads to long sentences
