Abstract

This article scrutinizes the correlation between lexical and syntactic systems of language through an analysis of the impact of meronymy on Arabic syntagmatic structure. The objective here is to introduce the conceptual significance of meronymy, and specifically, explore Arabic meronymic structures, examining correctness and acceptability of sentences based on meronymic typologies. Drawing upon the central tenets of linguistics and its fundamental theoretical trajectories, this article reviews key Arabic grammatical sources whilst investigating meronymic structures via inducing Classical Arabic corpus, retrieved from both The Holy Qur’an and the Prophetic traditions. In spite of its increasing popularity amongst scholars of linguistics, meronymy relation proves itself to be of remarkable significance in the construction of several rules in the Arabic language. In light of such precedence, this article provides for an alternative approach to verify the lexical conditions that govern grammatical rules, offering a more concise definition of meronymy and its implications for the field of Arabic linguistic studies.
