Merlin as a Druid-Bard in Tennyson’s Idylls of the King and its implied poetics

Abstract

이 논문은 테니슨의「왕의 목가」의 주요인물 중 하나인 멀린에 대한 테니슨의 재현을 고찰해 보는 것이다. 멀린은 중세 이래 아더의 전설을 소재로 한 많은 문학 작품에서 다양한 시각으로 재현되어왔다. 이 논문은 멀린을 보는 수많은 관점 중에 서도 18세기 중엽 이후 재정립된 드루이드이자 바드로서의 멀린에 초점을 맞추어 그를 조명하고, 그러한 재현에 함의된 테니슨의 시적 자의식에 대해 살펴보는 것이 다. 테니슨이 재현한 드루이드적 바드로서의 멀린을 논하기에 앞서 고대 켈트 사회 의 지적 엘리트였던 드루이드에 대해 일별한다. 또한 그들이 사회의 주도적 지식계 급에서 기독교의 도래 이후 몰락의 과정을 밟게 된 것과, 다시 복원된 경위, 그리고 새로이 정립된 드루이드의 특성에 대해 살펴본다. 테니슨의 멀린은 고대 켈트사회의 원형적 드루이드의 면모를 지니면서도 그들의 위상이 축소, 왜곡되었을 때의 부정적 이미지가 제거되고, 바드의 역할이 가미 되어 재정립된 드루이드적 바드의 면모를 지닌다. 이러한 멀린의 특징을 테니슨의 시와 시의 위상에 대한 견해와 연결시켜 논한다. 드루이드적 바드로서의 멀린의 특성은 그의 예언자-시인의 속성, 3행시 형식의 상징적 표현, 그리고 영감을 지닌 창조자로서의 그의 면모에서 발견할 수 있다. 그리고 여기에는 테니슨의 공적 존재로서의 시인관, 시의 상징적 표현에 대한 지지, 그리고 창조적 존재로서의 시인, 혹은 예술가에 대한 견해가 투영되어 있는데 이 논문에서 이를 고찰한다.This essay examines Merlin in Tennyson’s Idylls of the King. Merlin, one of the main characters of a variety of King Arthur’s stories, has been represented from diverse perspectives. This essay focuses on Merlin in Tennyson’s Idylls of the King as a Druidic bardic figure and creative artist among other perspectives. This perspective is closely related to Tennyson’s poetics including his concepts of poem, poet and poetic expression. Before arguing Tennyson’s Merlin, the historically various status of druids are considered from as intellectual elites in the ancient Celtic society to as weakened trifle sorcerers or swindlers in the Christianized era, and then as restored druidic bards in the late 18th century. Tennyson’s Merlin, following the tradition of the restored druidic bards, is especially characterized as a bard and creative artist. Merlin, while maintaining his status as an intellectual elite of the society, is displayed as a druidic bard in many ways such as a poet-prophet and the way of unfolding his ideas in the symbolic triplets known as the traditional druidic method of imparting truth. At the same time Tennyson describes him as a highly creative artist who is being inspired by imagination, his role model of a poet.
