Abstract

This article discusses failures of submersible pump seals, the subsequent mercury leakage into water wells, and the huge clean‐up implications of such a situation. The article provides best management practices for mitigating the risk of mercury leaks from submersible pumps, and recommends phasing out mercury seals in the long‐term.
