Abstract

A growth-inhibitor, Mercenene, has been extracted from a species of clam, Mercenaria campechiensis utilizing a procedure used successfully on other moluscs, and in particular, Mercenaria mercenaria . This inhibitor shows similar activity in the bio-assay systems employed in previous studies involving Mercenene. No toxicity was noted in the experimental animals and only slight toxicity in cell cultures of human amnion. HeLa cells were completely degenerated in 72 hours.
