Abstract

Preparations from the tissue of Mercenaria mercenaria and certain other marine invertebrates possess demonstrated in vivo antitumor activity, ascribed to the presence of a biologically-active principle named mercenene. In purified preparations mercenene is shown to be slowly dialyzable, heat stable, and highly active in tissue culture against human HeLa cancer cells. Chemical characterization studies on mercenene are described.
