Abstract

This study aims at examining the three historical stories of Omer Seyfettin in terms of problem solving method characteristics and determining how these stories can be used in Turkish language teaching. This is a descriptive study and qualitative data collection techniques were used. The characteristics of problem solving method were determined through literature review and data were obtained after having evaluated of Vire, Kutuk and Topuz stories of Omer Seyfettin according to these characteristics. At the end of the research, it was pointed out that problem solving method was successfully introduced in the stories of Omer Seyfettin. The problem statement is especially defined well in the stories, so creative solutions were suggested for the problems and the problem-solving process was accomplished. Omer Seyfettin was so impressed by the bad situation of the country in his time period and then he decided to be interested in history as a way out and to dignify historical characters. Dealing with the history is his way of solving the problems. The characters in his stories are people who are self-confident, having a purpose and working for this faithfully, trying to solve problems faced in a creative way, questioning and benefiting from other people's experiences. This kind of persons is the one desired by today's educational system. The stories are worth being used as a teaching material from this aspect. Considering describing problem in the stories, the way of suggesting solutions to the problems and applying them, students in Turkish language and literature classes can be desired to apply these steps and find similar solutions to similar problems taking this process as an example. Therefore, these stories should be used in Turkish language lessons and students should gain problem solving skills.
