Abstract

Psychological examinations were carried out in 100 boys with Duchenne's progressive muscular dystrophy (PMD) and in 20 children with spinal muscular atrophy. The mean IQ's were 76 ± 14.7, and 92 ± 14.1 in the two groups, respectively. Mental retardation in PMD does not depend on environmental factors or upon the severity of muscular involvement. In the families with more than one affected patient the IQ results were similar in affected sibs. The electroencephalograms (EEG) recorded from 52 boys with PMD were abnormal in 56% of cases, and showed a certain correlation with the level of mental development. Examination of families suggest that mental retardation in patients with Duchenne's PMD may be genetically determined.
