Abstract

Objective To study the mental health status and influencing factors in patients with eye enucleation. Methods Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) was applied to assess the mental health level of 193 patients with eye enucleation. Results The mean scores of SCL-90 factors in those patients were significantly higher than those in normal controls, especially for the factors of hostility and anxiety. There were significant differences in some of the SCL-90 factors among groups by sex, level of education, pathogeny of eye enucleation and duration of ocular trauma or diseases. Multiple factor analysis showed that pathogeny of eye enucleation was the main influencing factor of SCL-90 scores. Conclusions The mental health of patients with eye enucleation and ocular prosthesis is significantly lower than that of normal controls, and the pathogeny of eye enucleation is the major factor in mental health. Key words: Mental health; SCL-90; Eye enucleation
