Abstract

The emergence of mental health services, how they are funded and the types of services provided are discussed, as are the roles of various personnel employed in the delivery of services. Of particular interest is nursing care and the preparation and educational and professional maintenance of mental health nurses. The existence of the Czech Republic as an independent state started on 1 January 1993 with the break-up of Czechoslovakia into the Czech and Slovak republics. Many Czechs strongly identified themselves with the former state and perceived the separation as a loss and a political act performed, to a large extent, against the will of the citizens of both the new countries. An important milestone in the recent history of the Czech Republic was the ‘velvet revolution’ of 1989, when the communist regime was overthrown and democratic principles started to be re-established in society.
